Fleckvieh Influence

We love the Fleckvieh breed. In Florida, they are rare, and our goal is to raise high-quality fullblood Fleckvieh and Fleckvieh-influenced bulls that will work for commercial Florida cattle ranchers. Fleckviehs add growth traits, especially increasing weaning weights, maternal traits like milk production, hardiness, docility, and hybrid vigor when used on other breeds and commercial cows.

Fleckviehs are known for their size, which, unfortunately, often includes birth weight. We are working to lower the birth weight in our genetics to make them a realistic choice for commercial producers. Through artificial insemination and phenotypic and genotypic selection, we will be able to improve their birth weights. We also use Fleckviehs to create crossbred bulls, including F1 and 3/4 blood (crossed with Red or Black Angus or Brahman), as well as Fleckvieh-backed purebred Simmentals.

The Fleckieh Breed

Fleckvieh Simmental cattle originate primarily from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. They have always been considered a dual-purpose breed, used for both beef and milk production. In the United States, they are most commonly used for beef production.

They are very adaptable to many different climates and are known for their docility, milk quantity and quality, and growth characteristics.

They are fullblood Simmental, so they are registered with the American Simmental Association. "Fullblood" means that their bloodlines have had nothing except Fleckvieh Simmental introduced throughout their lineage.

Fleckvieh Simmentals are on the red scale, ranging from yellow to dark red, with white most often on the face and often iconically throughout the hide. They add frame and muscle to more moderate breeds when used in crossbreeding, which, for beef production, is a great quality, as they grow fast and produce large carcasses that grade well.

At Douglas Cattle Company, we recognized their potential to add a new splash to the Florida cow herd while keeping in line with a proven breed, Simmental. Simmental is such an amazing breed of beef cow, and these Fleckviehs add color and style to the pasture, pounds on the calves, udders on the heifers, and can keep up with the Florida heat.
